Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles to both the human body and the machines and instrumentation used in modern healthcare.

We provide undergraduate degrees at BEng and MEng level, including opportunities to spend a Year in Industry during your studies. We are also launching an MSc in Biomedical Engineering in 2023. This complements our graduate PhD programme drawing on our research strengths in Bioanalytics, Biomaterials and Biomechanics.

Our Biomedical Engineering graduates acquire a broad and comprehensive skillset in engineering, gain vital experience and knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and the ability to communicate with clinicians.

You will study around a thriving research community at Swansea University as our degrees draw on the exciting biomedical research taking place in our Biomedical Engineering Simulation and Testing (BEST) laboratory. This links student projects to the latest developments in the field and ensures they are relevant to today’s clinical challenges.

We have a wide portfolio of industrial links and commercial collaboration opportunities in computational design and modelling, prototype development and biomaterials testing. Previous graduates have gone on to have interesting careers at companies such as Renishaw, Calon Cardio-Technology Ltd, Olympus Surgical Technologies, NHS, GE Healthcare and the Royal Navy.
