- Description
As the NHS and other healthcare providers are put under increasing strain from the burden of diseases related to physical inactivity, the demand for graduates with skillsets in clinical exercise science and physiology is growing.
The MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology at Swansea University will equip students with the critical research-informed knowledge and understanding, along with the diverse range of applied and practical skills, that are needed to work with patients to optimise health, physical function, and quality of life through physical activity and exercise. Specifically, students will learn how to design, conduct and interpret a range of disease-specific health and fitness assessments, as well as design and deliver evidence-based physical activity and exercise interventions, and support patients to promote meaningful behaviour change, in order to optimise the prevention, treatment, and long-term management of a range of complex health conditions.
Students will then likely have the option either to complete a clinical placement module or undertake a research dissertation depending on their future career aspirations.
Ultimately, this MSc course will provide students with the knowledge and skills that are needed to go on to a successful career working as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist in a variety of healthcare and/or research settings.
- Topics Likely To Be Covered
The MSc will have a heavy practical emphasis and develop student’s practical competencies in a wide range of physiological and phenotypic measurements related to clinical exercise science and physical activity.
Students will cover a range of different chronic disease conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic conditions such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions (e.g. arthritis, sarcopenia), neurological conditions (e.g. stroke, multiple sclerosis), and cancer.
In each case, students will learn about:
- The pathophysiology of the disease
- The assessment of health status and functional capacity, as well as screening and risk stratification.
- The physiological responses to acute and chronic physical activity and exercise and how they might be altered by the disease.
- Design and delivery of appropriate physical activity and exercise interventions
- How to promote effective behaviour change
Students will also develop their critical thinking skills through the lens of contemporary issues and research themes related to clinical exercise science/physiology.
