Toby gets top five in Scotland!
It was a successful weekend for one of our Sports Scholars, Toby Peyton-Jones, as he paid a visit to Scotland to compete in the BUCS Wild Water racing (WWR) Championships.
Taking place on the 18th and 19th of November 2023, Toby travelled to Aberfeldy, Scotland with the team to compete in the Men’s Classic Kayaking competition. Toby placed second in the competition, with an incredible time of 7:38:26, with a close five second gap to 1st place.
Toby also competed in the Men’s Sprint Kayaking competition in Grandtully, Scotland where he placed 5th, with the top five all coming in within a second of each other. Tough conditions prevailed, including torrential rain, making this an all the more impressive achievement for Toby!
Toby has been competing in the Great Britain Ocean Racing squad for the past three years, attending multiple European and World Championships, with his most recent World Championship being last summer when he represented Great Britain. Toby is relatively new to wild water racing and in his second season has achieved so much already:
“This is a fairly new discipline for me but I'm loving learning and challenging myself.” – Toby Peyton-Jones
Toby is a second-year student at Swansea University, studying Sport and Exercise Science. He has been paddling for just over ten years now, and often calls himself a water baby, as he loves mixing sport and water! In his spare time, Toby juggles his training with a coaching job, sharing his love of water sports by training a squad of junior racers.
And kayaking is not the only sport that Toby excels at! He also plays for our Men’s Hockey 1st team, balancing his studies and his kayaking hobby, alongside training and match days with the hockey team - an extremely impressive sporting scholar, and we are proud of Toby’s achievements.
