Pro Vice Chancellor
The University welcomed Professor Charlotte Rees to the role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science in February 2025.
Professor Rees, who is originally from Bridgend south Wales, joined the University from the University of Newcastle, Australia where she was the Head of School of Health Sciences, College of Health, Medicine & Wellbeing.
Professor Rees is a Principal Fellow of Advance HE, and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. She has over 20 years’ experience as a medical and health professions education researcher, with over 180 peer-reviewed books, book chapters and journal articles. She was ranked as a top 100 social sciences researcher in Australia in 2023 and 2022.
Professor Rees has substantial experience leading education, research, and interdisciplinary teams and organisational units of different sizes and complexities. Since becoming full professor in 2010, she has held numerous leadership and management roles, including: Dean of Research & Innovation, College of Science, Health, Engineering and Education, Murdoch University, Australia (2019-2021); Director of Curriculum (Medicine) and Director of the Monash Centre for Scholarship in Health Education, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences, Monash University, Australia (2015-2019); Director of the Centre for Medical Education, University of Dundee, Scotland (2010-2015) and Director of the Scottish Medical Education Research Consortium (2011-2015).
She has helped secure around £5m in educational research income from prestigious funders in the UK (e.g., NHS Education for Scotland, General Medical Council, Higher Education Academy, Academy of Medical Royal Colleges) and Australia (e.g., Victorian Government Department of Health & Human Services, Australian Government Department of Health & Aged Care, Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency).
She has an extensive network of national and international collaborators (including with Government and industry), and she has led several evaluations of nationwide or state-wide educational interventions, leading to positive impacts on curriculum and assessment reforms, educational policies, educational practices, and healthcare student/practitioner learning outcomes.
