We asked, and you answered!
Here are some of our favourites from the Fulton Outfitters competition;
"I still, and will always, think of Swansea University as a home. It’s where I made friends for life. It’s where I acquired my passion for teaching, thanks to the passion of my teachers and lecturers... Unquestionably, I wouldn’t be where I am today without Swansea University."
"The lecturers on the programme inspired me to embark on achieving a career in research and lecturing, which is where I find myself now. Swansea provided me with opportunity to undertake an industrial placement at GlaxoSmithKline and then gave me the confidence to go on to study a PhD and become an academic. So really, it’s not Swansea per se that helped me get where I am today, it was the fantastic lecturers who believed in me."
"Swansea University definitely helped me to get where I am today as I met my husband there. He was a 3rd year Physics student, I was a first year Geography student in 1985. We started going out within days of meeting, got engaged when I finished my degree and married when I finished my PGCE course in the summer of 1989. We are soon to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary with our 4 sons. Our 3rd son has followed in our footsteps by studying at Swansea. And like his father he has also fallen for a fellow student, who happens to be a Welsh identical twin like me, maybe history will repeat itself for them.”
"Swansea University Education Department changed my life and enabled me to support others to change their lives. Thank you!"
“When I applied to Swansea University I was a young mother of 2, fighting to make a better life for myself and my family. I could never have completed my degree at any other university! Swansea staff helped me not just academically but financially and emotionally. The whole time there I felt I was part of a family, part of something more. I graduated in 2013 and began my dream career of being a paediatric nurse, which I still love. I became a role model for my children, so much so that my son has just completed his first year of a Law degree in Swansea University! We are a proud Swansea University house through and through.”
“Swansea university gave me the independence and confidence to tackle this world alone. It enhanced my interest in Egyptology and Ancient History which I later took further in a Classics Masters. I am now training as a teacher with the plan of travelling Asia and maybe the world. All of this was opened up to me by Swansea university. I came from nothing and now the world is my oyster.
My mental health problems have substantially improved since my teenage days and this was also largely due to the support I received at Swansea university. I made friends for life at Swansea and will see 3 of them get married this year.
Swansea is also the city I return to most often and hope, once my days of travelling are over, to settle in Swansea's beautiful Brynmill when the time comes for me to slow my pace of life. Standing on the train's platform at Swansea station still overwhelms me and as my eyes full with silent tears the memories come flooding back and I feel like I have came home every time I step off that train. I could not be more thankful for my time at Swansea - it truly prepared me for all of life’s experiences and has inspired me to live my life to the fullest and for that, I will always be super grateful!”
“Swansea University was my first academic institution when I came into the UK. It set the pace for many things I've gone on to do and it has set such a standard that has constantly become a reference point from wherever I am. I felt so supported and welcome. The staff seemed understanding and were very accommodating. Sometimes, all it took was the typical 'Welsh smile' to make me feel okay.
Every step of the way I sought guidance, they were there, they put me through things and pushed me to be the best I can be. I am grateful to Swansea University for its impact.”
“I left the Royal Air Force in 2001 and immediately transitioned onto the BSc (Hons) Biochemistry programme in September 2001. Swansea lecturers helped me settle in straightaway and helped me change my military style thinking to a more critical and academic style, for which I am grateful.
Swansea provided me with opportunity to undertake an industrial placement at GlaxoSmithKline and then gave me the confidence to go on to study a PhD and become an academic. So really, it’s not Swansea per se that helped me get where I am today, it was the fantastic lecturers who believed in me. They believed that an ex-member of the Armed Forces from a council estate in Newport could succeed and they made sure I knew it.”
