Jacob Draper might just have it all. Graduating with a first-class degree in Economics and having represented both Wales and Great Britain in Hockey, he is now looking forward to the Olympic Games.
Choosing Swansea
“I chose to study in Swansea as I felt I could get the best out of both worlds; pursue academia to an incredibly high standard (eventually achieving a 1st class in Economics) and also being close to internationally standard resources which would benefit my sporting and now a professional career.
“I'm a big believer in ‘you get what you work for’; this has been incredibly beneficial for me, especially in Swansea. If you’re willing to work hard and go out and dive into every experience you get out of Swansea Uni, then you won’t just come out with an incredibly valuable degree but also as a very well rounded individual, with many more skills than reflected on your degree certificate.”
"My favourite moment was qualifying for the Olympic Games in front of a huge crowd and representing Great Britain."
World-class
“Sport for me at Swansea was everything. I made friends for life, whilst also taking advantage of the World-class facilities, which I believe are the reason I could and was able to turn professional straight from University.
“My hockey career has been turbulent, with decisions like attending university rather than focusing on hockey, injuries and deselections. But I think you have to fall in love with the process – and that has helped me be in the position I’m in currently.
“My favourite moment was qualifying for the Olympic Games in front of a huge crowd and representing Great Britain. The whole experience blew me away and got me incredibly excited for the upcoming Olympic Games.”
What’s next?
“For the time being, I'm enjoying being a professional athlete who is fortunate enough to get paid for what I love to do. I live in Central London so soaking up everything from the capital is huge too!
“I'm fortunate enough to have space in my house for a small gym so during lockdown, I’ve obtained weights, benches and a squat rack…so I can not only keep fit but suffer in the comfort of my house!
