Your Career
I am an electrical engineer in building services. I closely collaborate with Structural, Civil, Mechanical, and Public Health Engineers to deliver an overall sustainable design. My day-to-day role consists of power demand assessments, utility consultancy, power supply, and system resilience design. I am also keen on whole-life carbon assessments of MEP services currently focusing on Embodied carbon especially.
Summary of your Swansea University experience
My SU experience was filled with opportunities like making long life friends from around the world, career events that introduced me to the company I work with currently, working as a student ambassador for the EEE department including showcasing microcontrollers made by the students, the Global Grand Challenges and beach walks.
What are your top 3 favourite things about Swansea (the University/city/area)?
The first would be that Swansea felt like home. Thanks to my community of friends and lovely church family that heavily contributed to this. Not forgetting the welcoming feel of not only the city but strangers you meet on the streets as well. Swansea is quite picturesque; I've made multiple trips to Mumbles Pier for ice cream and the view mostly during the summer, but I definitely went every now and again during other seasons too not forgetting multiple landscape views too.
Why did you choose to study for your degree at Swansea?
As an international student meeting a Swansea University Rep and being able to sit down and have a chat made the difference as I wasn't able to make any of the open days. I slightly missed the qualification to go straight into first-year engineering which is what I really wanted to do even though I qualified for the first year of other courses. Swansea gave me the option of starting off at the college which was ICWS then for a foundation year that was part of the engineering course I wanted which was a no-brainer.
Would you recommend Swansea University to someone thinking of going to University?
I would definitely do it for all the reasons I mentioned before but also because in my experience I had amazing lecturers that were not only knowledgeable in their fields of research but also took the time to invest in the students alongside their research.Someone once said Swansea University will take an average/below average student and make a first-degree graduate out of them. Now of course this is a two-way street, you can only get out as much as you put in, but I still thought that was pretty cool especially since I witnessed this on many occasions.
How did your degree prepare you for your career?
It laid a good foundation for my career.
What advice would you give to students who want to pursue your career?
Firstly, go for it! I'd recommend applying for summer placements which will give you a feel of the job and an apprenticeship route. It is quite dynamic, and no project is ever the same if you like a challenge. There are also opportunities to volunteer your skills with charity organisations focused on community development if that is something you're keen on too.
