Having studied English at undergraduate level, it might at first seem unusual that I am on a doctoral program in Computer Science. However, my professional experience since my degree led me to explore computing and technology in many ways that I have found incredibly exciting. After leaving university I started work as an information systems specialist at a large academic publisher, Taylor & Francis, specialising in peer review systems and software. After this I moved on to become a Business Analyst at a software start up. Here I would work closely with users to determine their technological needs and develop specifications for systems development. I began working with databases and SQL and eventually moved into the world of Python programming. Immediately prior to starting at the Centre for Doctoral Training here at Swansea, I was a Technical Data Science Trainer, training people with no background in data or computing about all things data science as part of the UK government’s Plan for Jobs programme. As part of this I worked with the British Computing Society (BCS) to deliver training and qualifications in machine learning, agile development, and business analysis. I am delighted to be here at the Centre and look forward to working with academics and key industry partners on inspiring and challenging projects.
