Gauri Viswanathan is a professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Among her publications are Masks of Conquest: Literary Study and British Rule in India (1989) and Outside the Fold: Conversion, Modernity and Belief (1998).
Professor Viswanathan’s paper was a part of ‘Imperial Subjects: (Post)colonial Conversations between South Asia and Wales’, that took place online in May 2020 and was led by British Art Network bursary awardee Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea, and South Asian Art Historian Dr Zehra Jumabhoy, Associate Lecturer at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
Put together in collaboration with Professor Daniel G. Williams, Swansea University, the series aimed to contest stereotypical narratives about Britain, South Asia and colonialism. These seminars marked the beginning of the build-up to a major exhibition at Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, featuring contemporary Welsh and South Asian artists in 2022.

Professor Gauri Viswanathan delivered a paper on Raymond Williams and the ‘other within’ and the ‘other outside’. The paper was the first of the series of Raymond Williams related events organised by Daniel G. Williams and the Centre for Research into the Literature and Language of Wales (CREW), 2020 - 21.
