Ghent University is more than 200 years old and conducts in-depth research within a wide range of scientific domains.  It is a top 100 university and one of the major universities in Belgium, making it an attractive option for exchange.  The University is located within the city of Ghent, just a 30-minute train ride away from Brussels and is on the line from Brussels to Bruges as well as the coast. It is a city of history, and during the Middle Ages was one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. The impact of this can still be seen today, with its impressive architecture throughout the city. There is plenty to see and do in the vicinity, and the student areas are packed with pubs, bars and clubs. Aside from its vibrant social scene, Ghent offers museums, cathedrals and other historic buildings for those looking to soak in the scenery and culture.

Important information

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs September to May. 

COSTS: The cost of living in Belgium will vary depending on your chosen accommodation and lifestyle. Living standards are high in Belgium. Ghent provides estimates on their cost of living webpage.  

VISA: You may need to apply for a temporary Residence Permit in order to obtain a study visa (type D visa) and will be required to provide financial evidence of at least 1000 Euros per month (subject to change). Proof of funds will need to be submitted via a blocked account at Ghent.  The Residence Permit fee is approx. 237 Euros in 2024 and is adjusted annually on the 1st of January. Your host university will provide you with more information about the process as part of your application and more information can be found here. You must allow enough time to complete the application and for your permit to be sent to you. There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to Belgium without it.

ACCOMMODATION: If you are studying for a semester you will have first priority for accommodation in the Halls of Residence.  If you are studying for the academic year you will have second priority for accommodation in the Halls of Residence.  You are encouraged to submit an application for accommodation once you have been accepted at Ghent. The Housing Office will process your housing application.   There is a high demand for housing in Ghent in the first semester.
