Appalachian State University is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and is one of 17 institutions in the University of North Carolina System. Appalachian’s leadership in sustainability is known nationally. Locally sourcing more than 25% of their on campus food and catering, the University considers if actions are sustainable economically, environmentally and equitably in relationship to our planet’s co-inhabitants. With a 16:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 27, students are sure to receive excellent tuition and attention from staff. With around 1,200 acres, 20 varsity sports, 11 recreational and athletic facilities and more than 80 ways to participate in intramural sports, there will be excitement and social events round every corner. There are also more than 400 clubs and organizations for undergraduate and graduate students to sign up to, whether you prefer the outdoors, concerts, movies or gaming, there will be no shortage of activities to engage with.

It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.

Who can study here?

Swansea has a ‘university-wide’ partnership with this university which means that it is open to all subject areas except for Classics, Media Studies, Education, Early Childhood Studies, Social Policy, Politics & IR, Engineering or Law.
Spaces are not guaranteed, can be limited and all students on a semester/year abroad programme are subject to a university-wide, competitive selection process.

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs August to May.

COSTS: The cost of living in Appalachian will vary depending on the type of accommodation and meal plan you select. For visa (study permit) purposes, you will be required to provide financial evidence for a specific amount. Further details are below.

VISA: You will need a J-1 exchange visa and will be required to provide financial evidence of at least $11,416 based on the 2023-2024 academic year (subject to change). 
To apply for a visa, you will need to pay a SEVIS fee of approx $220 plus an application fee of approx $185. In addition, you should factor in the cost of attending a visa interview at the US Embassy (typically in London). You must allow enough time to complete the visa application and for your visa to be sent to you. There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to the USA without it.

ACCOMMODATION: All exchange students are placed in campus housing. The accommodation application is released after you have been accepted. On campus accommodation is available, and usually includes a meal plan. 

HEALTH INSURANCE: You will be required to purchase mandatory health insurance for your time at Appalachian. ALL exchange students are required to purchase the Appalachian Student Health Insurance or, prove that you have a comparable plan.  This insurance meets the required coverage of your student visa.
