Important information
ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs August to May.
COSTS: The cost of living in Tallahassee will vary depending on your chosen accommodation and your lifestyle. FSU estimate cost of living amounts for students on their Initial Expenses webpage.
VISA: You will need a J-1 exchange visa to study at FSU and will be required to provide financial evidence which meets the requirements of at least $21,132 based on the 2024/25 academic year (subject to change). After admission to FSU and enrolling in the required insurance, Center for Global Engagement staff will review the student’s financial documentation submitted with application and will issue the immigration document required for the J-1 visa application (DS-2019).
To apply for a visa, you will need to pay a SEVIS fee of approx $220 plus an appliction fee of approx $185. In addition, you should factor in the cost of attending a visa interview at the US Embassy (typically in London). More information is available on the US Embassy website: https://uk.usembassy.gov/applying-f-1-j-1-visa/
You must allow enough time to complete the visa application and for your visa to be sent to you. There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to the USA without it.
ACCOMMODATION: Student accommodation may be available on campus but is not guaranteed due to high student demand. Students seeking on-campus housing should apply as soon as possible after being formally admitted to FSU and receiving their FSU log in. http://housing.fsu.edu. The housing contract cannot be cancelled later if a student decides to not live on-campus so students should consider their options carefully! Oncampus housing also closes for official university breaks such as Winter Break and Spring Break. Students living on campus need to find alternate accommodations at their own expense.
For off-campus housing, the Center for Global Engagement maintains a list of off-campus apartments at: http://cge.fsu.edu/living-tallahassee/housing
HEALTH INSURANCE: The FSU Student Health Plan offers comprehensive coverage that meets all of these requirements and allows students to use the FSU Student Health Center without paying for the visit and costs upfront. Students may purchase insurance after receiving notice of admission to FSU.
IMMUNISATIONS: All students are required to submit proof of immunizations before being registered for classes by the Center for Global Engagement. Two combined MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccinations administered after the student’s 1st birthday and at least 28 days apart are required. The Immunization Form must be signed by a doctor or clinician. Download the Immunization Form at: https://studentinsurance.fsu.edu/immunizationrequirements
