The University of Kansas is the state’s flagship university and one of just 62 invited members of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). The main campus is on Mount Oread, the highest elevation in Lawrence. During your time here why not take part in the National Debate tournament, the University of Kansas has won 6 times, and made it to the finals with 15 teams. If you’re more athletically inclined then consider competing for one of the many Sports teams as a Kansas Jayhawk and wear their signature crimson and royal blue colours. There are over 600+ student organisations to choose from, there will be something for everyone.
It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.
Who can study here?
Swansea has a ‘university-wide’ partnership with this university which means that it is open to all subject areas except for Criminology, Law, or Biosciences.
Spaces are not guaranteed, can be limited and all students on a semester/year abroad programme are subject to a university-wide, competitive selection process.

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs from August to May.
COSTS: The cost of living in Kansas will vary depending on the type of accommodation and meal plan you select.
VISA: You will need a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa to study at Kansas. As part of the visa application, you will need to evidence financial support. For 23/24 the requirements was US$13,542 for the year. For 2024/25, additional costs included $185 DS 160 Visa application fee and $220 SEVIS I-901 fee. Costs and evidence of financial support amounts are subject to change for 25/26. In addition, you should factor in the cost of attending a visa interview at the US Embassy (typically in London). ACCOMMODATION: On-campus accommodation is available, and usually includes a meal plan. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for campus accommodation as soon as they have received acceptance from Kansas. Off campus accommodation can be difficult to find and the responsibility of the student to source.
HEALTH INSURANCE: You will be required to purchase mandatory health insurance for your time at Kansas and you will be automatically enrolled in the insurance plan. They will provide more information on acceptance.
