Student story University of Kansas

Michael spend 1 academic year (2014-2015) studying at the University of Kansas as part of his American Studies degree at Swansea University. Here are some of the comments he made about his experience: 

The University of Kansas at Lawrence

"It was as real to the typical American “college experience” that I had hoped and imagined to experience, similar in a sort of way to many of the films that advertise it yet also completely different...It was located slap bang in the middle of America, flat fields as far as the eye could see, but it was a perfect town to study abroad in."

 

Biggest Highlights

"To say I had a favourite moment can be a bit of an understatement, the whole year was a memory that I will never forget though there are a few that teeter above the rest. I got the opportunity to see President Barack Obama in person giving a speech in February of this year, a truly amazing public speaker and once in a lifetime experience. I also saw many sporting events which exude unbelievable passion unseen at English university level."

Challenges

"There were some challenges whilst abroad, assimilation can be a big one in getting used to the subtle differences in culture such as tipping and the lack of public transport. The time difference also could be a bit of a struggle to keep in contact with friends or family being 6 hours behind and so far away from home, though most of the time I embraced my new surroundings and thoroughly enjoyed it."

Reflection

"The year has certainly been eye opening and has given me a detailed look and experience into the U.S.A. One which I already had an affinity for but in realising this affinity it has only strengthened it. I look forward to the future to complete my studies and hopefully one day move, if not make frequent trips to make more great memories but also visit many of the friends made through the experience."
