How do you feel about winning this scholarship?
I feel very grateful with the Chevening Secretariat and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) because they believed in me and gave me the opportunity to expand my leadership skills, networking and knowledge (academic and cultural). For me winning the Chevening Scholarship is a unique opportunity which will empower me to attain my person goals and make a change in my home country.
Why did you choose to study at Swansea University?
I decided to study at Swansea University because the university is the best university worldwide to study my course – International Maritime Law. At the same time, the university offered a wide variety of assistance, specially to international students, which was a vital element for me as I was about to move across the world without my family.
Can you tell us about your course?
International Maritime Law is one of the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law postgraduate taught courses. This is a one-year program where one can learn from industry experts and obtain the legal expertise on issues regarding navigation and commerce at sea. It focuses not only on the academic side of the law, but also on practical experience allowing the student to have a well-rounded knowledge of the law.
What part of the course do you enjoy the most?
My favourite part of the course is the seminars. During seminars, we (the students) are required to apply the knowledge acquired through lectures and reading and give legal advice to a “client”. This is very new and challenging to me because my background is not law; I am an engineer. Therefore, seminars have given me a first-hand taste of what the law feels like in practice.
What are your three favourite things about Swansea?
My three favourite things about Swansea are: the beach walk route, the delicious food at the Swansea Indoor City Market and the beautiful views from Limeslade Bay.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to go back to Mexico and continue to serve in the Mexican Navy. Specifically, I plan on serving at the Port Captaincies and Maritime Affairs Unit where I will share my knowledge with other military members.
What support or facilities have you found particularly useful as an international student?
I believe that the most important support I have received so far from Swansea University was the support given during my self-isolation, as I arrived in the UK, due to Covid-19. Swansea University offered a wide variety of support such as free accommodation, food, toiletries, and other continuous support during those 14 days to keep international students and students already at Swansea safe. This was very important to me because it allowed my adaptation process to be easier and smoother. Campus Life also offers a wide variety of great activities for health and wellness to students.
Would you recommend Swansea University to other international students?
International Students should definitely come to Swansea. In Swansea they will find a warm community of students and professors who are committed and willing to help you in any way. The staff are amazing and approachable so, even if there are questions left during lectures, they are always available to fill the gaps. At the same time, Swansea University is located in a student city, closely connected to nature and culturally diverse which will make you feel at home.
