Meet Our Students

Meet our students who have taken part in a range of competitions, and hear about their experiences competing on behalf of the School of Law at Swansea University.

Brianne Menchion

“Having taken part in many legal competitions has helped me to gain invaluable experience that I will carry forward both into my professional career and in my everyday life. I have had opportunities to practically apply my knowledge, helping me to be more confident, articulate, and comfortable in professional settings.

Participating in the competitions has allowed me to connect with legal professionals within the UK and globally, helping me to develop the ability to work in diverse settings and create a professional presence for myself before entering into my working life.”

Alexandra Hill

“Participation in mooting and negotiating competitions had a significant impact on both my personal and career development during my time at Swansea. Research around moot problems helped to improve my legal knowledge and application, and I was able to develop interpersonal skills and network during the competition with likeminded students.

My confidence and commercial awareness were improved; which translated well in training contract interviews. I strongly believe that the competitions had a positive impact on my final degree classification.”

Lawrence Thomas

“I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the skills competitions at Swansea. They have had a massive impact on my career development.

Preparing for and taking part in competitions improves several skills necessary in practice: public speaking; legal research; developing and articulating an argument. In my view, developing these skills during university gives you a head start when beginning legal training. Also, simply being able to show to a potential employer that you were motivated and organised enough to find time for the competitions is, in my opinion, very valuable.”

Hailey Doyle

“Being able to participate in the Swansea skills competitions has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my academic career. Each competition I took part in helped me to grow both professionally and personally.

I have had the opportunity to travel and make connections with people from different backgrounds, including solicitors, negotiators, professors, and students from other universities, allowing me to improve my communication skills. The opportunities have benefited me significantly, and I look forward to continuing to get involved.”

Anna Lasenko

“I entered my first competition for fun, to just challenge my own social anxiety. But instead, I fell in love with litigation, negotiation, and advocacy.

Not only has it strengthened my communications skills and helped slowly dampen the anxiety that surrounds public speaking, but it has also opened a much deeper passion for a portion of law that I never anticipated on liking so much. In fact, I now hope to pursue a career centred around business litigation.”

Bradley Selleck

“Participating in Swansea's legal skills competitions has afforded me the opportunity to grow both as an advocate and as an individual.

With a massive focus on communication, I have been taught to engage effectively in court, or across the table in a negotiation or client interview. All of this practice has allowed me to foster my own style of speaking, which has been just as useful in day-to-day life as in a professional setting.”

Alexandra Stewart

“I have really enjoyed competing in various skills competitions throughout my time at Swansea. The competitions have provided me with the opportunity to build crucial soft skills such as communication, conflict resolution, teamwork, and research which are incredibly important when seeking a job in the legal field.

I have also had the opportunity to use the knowledge I have gained in class and apply it to scenarios that would appear in real life, which has really benefitted my understanding of legal concepts.”
