Why Study Medical Sciences at Swansea?

Here at Swansea University, we are serious about the biomedical sciences and the transformative nature of this sector to the health, wealth and wellbeing of our communities globally. We have made it our mission to utilise our scientific knowledge to improve real patient health outcomes.

Our undergraduate BSc and MSci degrees offer you the opportunity to specialise in different fields of the biomedical sciences, understand how the body functions, how it reacts to different stimuli and how this understanding can translate to the delivery of healthcare tailored to the individual. Such knowledge supports us in exploring, and overcoming the greatest challenges we face as a species and in preparing our students to meet these challenges head-on as a scientist.

Our biomedical sciences programmes are regularly ranked highly in national league tables. For example, we were placed 12th in the UK for biomedical sciences by the Complete University Guide (2024) and top in Wales for biomedical sciences by The Guardian (2024).

New for 2024

Our new interdisciplinary Microbiology and Immunology BSc and Microbiology and Immunology with a Foundation Year, BSc will bring the areas of Microbiology and Immunology together, focusing on how they interplay with one another in response to infectious diseases as well as considering disorders that occur as the result of a malfunctioning immune system.

Student Blog: Ffion Evans, MSci Biochemistry

Ffion studied Biochemistry at Swansea Univeristy, graduating with her Msci in 2020. Here is her experience of studying at Swansea:

"Whilst choosing a university, the ability to study through the medium of Welsh was very important to me. Swansea University offer Biochemistry partly in Welsh. On the open day the campus felt homely and the staff were friendly, supportive and very enthusiastic about the course.

At school, Biology and Chemistry were my favourite subjects. I have a keen interest in the changes that happen to the body as it suffers from different diseases, especially degenerative conditions.

Therefore, studying Biochemistry expands my understanding of these subjects and I had the chance to do a research project on a degenerative disease in my fourth year."
