To apply you will need to be:

• First level nurse / midwife registered with NMC
• Successful completion of Honours degree in UK
• Enhanced current DBS disclosure
• Appropriate Health Board host organisation and the availability of a suitable practice placement that has a current educational audit and the support of a Practice Assessor & Supervisor that meets the NMC requirements.
• Negotiated secondment

Secured funding (HEIW funded places only apply to nurses or midwives working for the NHS in Wales). Nurses / midwives working outside the NHS or outside Wales must provide evidence of funding on application.

Throughout the programme you are expected to maintain your registration and practice in accordance with The Code: Standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives (2015).

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching. 

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

During assessment you will have to complete an All Wales clinical portfolio which assesses the clinical element of the programme. In addition most modules will contain an academic assessment. A variety of assessments are used to demonstrate achievement of the module learning outcomes and include unseen examinations, essays, presentation and patchwork text.

This should be completed within a maximum of four years.

Each clinical placement is supported by a qualified Practice Assessor & Supervisor.

Some provision

There are opportunities for Welsh speakers to study some elements of this postgraduate course through the medium of Welsh but there is not yet enough provision to reach 40 credits in each year. The Programme Director can outline to you what is available in Welsh.

All staff who teach on the programme hold at least a first degree with the majority holding a Master’s degree and / or doctorate. Many will hold specialist qualifications eg Health Visiting, School Nursing, District Nursing.  All academic staff are registered with the NMC and therefore must meet the requirements of NMC revalidation.

The majority of academics who teach on the programme hold an NMC recordable teaching qualification (or working towards) and/ or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). This is an international recognition of a commitment to professionalism in teaching and learning in higher education and demonstrates that our practice is aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).

In addition, the school includes a number of other experts within its staff resource including honorary lecturers, academic support staff and clinical practice teachers and individuals employed in the NHS and other agencies who contribute to the work of the department in a variety of ways.
