About

Awarded Advanced Research Fellowship from the UK’s Engineering and Physical Research Council (EPSRC) in recognition of innovative research applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) to the characterisation of separation membranes and biological surfaces. This five year award allowed Dr Chris Wright to establish an internationally recognised research group exploiting the capabilities of AFM, on completion the research of the fellowship was reviewed as internationally leading.

Research focuses on the characterisation and control of the biological interface and now includes the control of polymer surfaces for improved membrane separation and tissue engineering, the control of bacterial biofouling

The underlying themes of this research are the application of nanotechnology to process engineering and health care.

Research has been sustained through major grants from EPSRC, NERC, MRC, TSB, Europe (FP7), charity and industry including Pfizer, GSK and numerous SMEs.

Over 90 peer reviewed international communications, a book on membrane modification and 15 invited book chapters and review articles.

Taught Modules

EG-3055 Tissue Engineering

Modern medicine is looking to tissue engineering to solve many disease states through the harnessing of the body¿s own repair mechanisms. Every day in the news we are seeing exciting glimpses into the application of tissue engineering for the replacement of tissues and eventually organs within the human body. Thus, the aim of the module is to provide the students with a rigorous understanding of the underlying themes of tissue engineering and equip them for the future developments that will impact significantly on their career as biomedical engineers. The module starts with an examination of how cells grow and differentiate into tissues, this is from an engineering prospective looking at the cell interactions, adhesion and mechanics. The importance of stem cells in regenerative medicine will also be discussed. In order to engineer tissue the cells environment must be controlled so the module features a comprehensive examination on the design and production of scaffolding to guide cell growth and differentiation. This is accompanied by a similar assessment on the use of specialist bioreactors to amplify cell numbers, entrap cells in scaffolds and condition them so that they will survive implantation. In the latter part of the module case studies are used to reinforce the processes involved in tissue engineering. Thus, the module finishes with a consideration of the current state of the art of tissue engineering with applications including cartilage, bone, skin and artificial organ engineering.

This module is an advanced look at the design, fabrication and optimisation of medical implants and prosthetics. Case studies will be used to bring together engineering concepts and apply them to key devices that are used to treat disease and assist patients.
EGNM05 Bio-nanotechnology

The module aims to equip the student with an understanding of the concepts behind bionanotechnology. To achieve this the student is introduced to the relevant biological processes that control life with nanoscale systems. This knowledge is established from the perspective of nanoscale engineering.
