About

Dr Eylan Yutuc did his BSc in Biomedical Science in Brunel University London and graduated in 2011. During his undergraduate time, he was involved in recombinant protein synthesis and purification of complement protein C1q in bacterial strains in the Centre for Infection, Immunity and Disease Mechanisms, Brunel University. He eventually did his final year project in the same lab which investigated the interactions of the human acute phase C-reactive protein with Aspergillus fumigatus under the supervision of Dr Uday Kishore.

Eylan started his Ph.D. in Medical and Health Care Studies with the Griffiths-Wang Swansea group in January 2013 where he concentrated on the identification, quantification and analysis of oxidised metabolites of cholesterol generated by human CD4+ T lymphocytes cultured in vitro using techniques such as lipid extraction, enzyme-assisted derivatisation, solid-phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry.

Expanding on his skills as a Post Doctoral Researcher, he has now progressed into developing and applying novel mass spectrometric techniques and instrumentation on neurobiology, looking at the relationship of sterol lipids in neurophysiology and neuropathology. Eylan is a member of the British Mass Spectrometry Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Current project, with Professors William J. Griffiths and Yuqin Wang, is to build a three-dimensional sterol atlas of the mouse brain to complement advancing knowledge in the effects of sterol metabolism in neurobiology.

PM-277 Techniques in Molecular Biology

The module will provide a sound theoretical basis to a comprehensive range of biomolecular techniques currently employed in molecular genetics and biochemistry. Particular emphasis is placed on DNA recombinant technology, next generation sequencing, transcriptomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry.
PM-280 Skills for Researchers

The modern scientist graduate is expected to have gained extensive laboratory-based experience and this is certainly essential for any student intent on pursuing a research-based career. Skills for Researchers provides students with the opportunity to acquire the core skills to be able to conduct, analyse, interpret and present scientific experiments. A proportion of the module will be spent in the laboratory gaining hands-on experience. Skills acquired in this module will form the basis for future experimental work, including the final year project. Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback to peers and engage with a variety of online learning materials.
PM-340 Being a Medical Scientist

Much of a scientist¿s career is spent writing and speaking about science. The aim of this module is to give students a higher level experience of what being a lead researcher is like, away from the lab bench. Drawing on core knowledge from other modules, students will refine their oral and written communication and learn what leadership skills are needed to succeed in modern science. They will also be challenged to consider ethical aspects of research, including new technologies and the use of animal and human subjects. The module will be highly interactive, taught using informal lectures interspersed with students working in groups.
PM-344 Capstone Project

The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.
PMLM22 Laboratory Measurement Techniques for Medical Sciences

This module will enable students to understand the basic and advanced concepts of laboratory and measurement techniques used in medical sciences, how they may be applied with relevant methods of detection, gain `hands on¿ problem solving experience and strategic method development for complete bioanalysis according to target molecule characteristics and method application.
