Prof Gert Aarts FLSW is a professor in theoretical physics, with research interests in QCD under extreme conditions, the sign problem, and computational and analytical approaches in quantum field theory.

He is currently Director of the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Advanced Computing (AIMLAC) and Head of the Particle Physics and Cosmology Theory group.

PH-329 Quantum Information Processing

The basic concepts of quantum mechanics, quantum algorithms and quantum computers are introduced. Students will reach an understanding of some of today¿s most relevant quantum algorithms, including Grover's search algorithm and Shor¿s algorithm for factoring, as well as quantum teleportation and quantum cryptography protocols. Physical realisations are reviewed. Density matrices are discussed in details. Modern developments, such as quantum supremacy, are included.
PH-M28 Machine Learning for Physicists

The methodology of ML is expected to become relevant for all physicists, whether they are active in academic research, industry, services or teaching. The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to machine learning (ML) for final year MPhys students, combining the mathematical basis with coding examples, and highlighting the potential of current trends in this fast-moving field.
