About

Dr Osian Rees joined Swansea University in October 2018. He commenced his academic career at Bangor University in 2004, when he was appointed as a lecturer in the newly established School of Law. He was subsequently promoted to senior lecturer, before being appointed as Head of Quality Assurance for Bangor University in 2015. In this role, Dr Rees was responsible for the implementation of Bangor University’s quality assurance processes, including programme approval and review. He also contributed to a range of enhancement initiatives, and led the development of a University-wide Assessment Framework. During his tenure as Head of Quality Assurance, Bangor University underwent a highly successful institutional review undertaken by the Quality Assurance Agency in May 2018.

Since joining Swansea University, Dr Rees has continued to undertake quality assurance and enhancement functions. He is a member of the University’s Programme Approval Committee and Collaborative Provision Board, and is Deputy Chair of the Academic Data Quality Committee.

He has subsequently developed a research profile in the fields of devolution, the human rights of children and family law. He has published in a range of leading academic journals, including Child and Family Law Quarterly, the International Journal of Children’s Rights, Statute Law Review, Conveyancer and Property Lawyer, Contemporary Wales, Gwerddon and the Wales Journal of Law and Policy. He has undertaken a number of funded research projects, including two projects examining the impact of devolution on the development of Family Law in Wales.

Dr Rees has taught a range of legal subjects at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has also supervised a number of PhD students to successful completion. He is a fluent Welsh speaker, and has taught and supervised through the medium of Welsh.

Dr Rees graduated from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 2001, with a First Class LLB Honours degree. Upon graduating, he received a number of awards for academic excellence, including the Sir Samuel Evans Prize for the best law finals in the Welsh Universities. After graduating, he undertook doctoral study at Aberystwyth, for which he received a full Scholarship from the ESRC. His thesis evaluated the impact of the establishment of the Children’s Commissioner for Wales in promoting the rights of children and young people.
