About

Dr James Murray is a Senior Lecturer in ageing and ageing-related diseases. With a background in molecular immunology and cell signalling his group investigates mechanisms of ageing and ageing-related pathologies using the African Turquoise Killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri) as a model.

Killifish have a naturally short life span of fewer than six months, and exhibit tissue degeneration, similar to humans, and uniquely for vertebrate models are neurodegenerative. Killifish are also gene editable, and possess additional qualities that set them apart as a model for ageing research.

Areas Of Expertise

  • Biochemistry
  • Molecular immunology/virology
  • Cell biology
  • Autophagy
  • Cell signalling
  • Protein/lipid kinases
  • Drug discovery and target validation
