About

Dr Richard Metcalfe is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Exercise Physiology within the Applied Sport, Technology, Exercise and Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre. Having graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science (1st class) from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh in 2010, he subsequently completed his PhD in Health and Exercise Physiology at The University of Bath (2010-2015) under the supervision of Dr Niels Vollaard and Prof Dylan Thompson. He joined Swansea University in October 2017, after 3-years working as a Lecturer in Exercise and Health at Ulster University in Northern Ireland (2014-2017).

Career Highlights

Research

Richard's research interests span the effects of physical activity, exercise and nutrition on cardiometabolic health, but his primary research focus is on the health benefits of time-efficient high-intensity interval training (HIT). This strand of research aims to ‘optimise’ HIT protocols for sedentary populations by making them shorter and easier while retaining the associated health benefits. The last 10 years of his research has culminated in an exercise protocol which takes no longer than 10 minutes to complete (2 times/week) and involves no more than 40-seconds of high-intensity exercise. This protocol, termed reduced-exertion HIT (REHIT), has great potential to remove many of the barriers that prevent sedentary individuals from reaping the health benefits of regular exercise.
