Swansea’s School of Law puts a strong focus on experiential learning – the process of ‘learning through doing’.
Our students compete on behalf of the Law School and the University in skills of trial advocacy, appellate advocacy, client interviewing, negotiation, and mediation. Many of our law students studying on the dual degree programme achieve excellent results, with several recent successes involving Canadian law students detailed below:
Mooting
- Bradley Selleck and Adshayan Kuruncikumaran (both 3rd years) finished off their run in the Michael Corkery QC Moot. Despite getting strong feedback from the judge, they were unfortunately not in the top 2 scoring teams to progress to the Final.
- In the Southampton National Moot, Rohan Ganeriwal (2nd year) and Raquel Grobe (3rd year) flew the flag for Swansea. They fought very well but were not able to progress to the Final 4. Particular shout out to Raquel who stepped on 36 hours’ notice, and did an incredible.
- In the English Speakers Union Moot, Anna Lasenko (3rd year) and Nick Mitchell (2nd year) beat the University of Exeter in round 1 and the University of Aberystwyth in round 2 to progress to the 3rd round - reaching the last 16 is a best for Swansea and they could still go even further.
Mediation
- The Swansea team of Chloe Gear, Chidinma Nwalupue and Norma Omiller (all final years) travelled to Edinburgh for the UK Mediation Competition. They finished 3rd overall representing Swansea’s best result in the competition.
Client Interviewing
- Alexandra Stewart and Sara Wideman (both 3rd years) won the National Client Interviewing Competition Online Regional! They go on to the National Competition with the potential to represent Wales in the Internationals still on the table.
- In the Mediate Guru Client Interviewing Competition, we sent 4 teams, with Abigail Edwards (1st year) and Colm Yethon (1st year) reaching the semi-finals and quarter-finals respectively.
- Lexie Stewart and Sara Wideman (both 3rd years) became the first Swansea team to win the England and Wales National Client Interviewing Competition! They performed brilliantly across three incredibly challenging rounds and won by a clear 20 points. Lexie and Sara go on to represent Wales in the International Competition in Poland.
Negotiations
- We sent two teams to the CEDR National Negotiation Competition. Anna Lasenko (3rd year) and Amelia Triaca (2nd year) were unfortunately unable to progress, but Emma Layton and Hadley Middleton (both 3rd years) progressed to the National Competition next month - the third year in a row we have had a team progress to the Nationals!
- Finally, Chloe Gear and Emily McGillivray-Crawford (both final years) won the York Inter-Varsity Negotiation Competition in our first year entering! They recorded a perfect 5-0 winning streak.
