Three students from Swansea’s School of Law recently achieved huge successes at the British Inter-University Commercial Awareness Competition (BIUCAC).
BIUCAC is the largest commercial awareness competition in the UK. It was set up to support the tremendously talented law students studying at non-Rusell Group universities, and to provide a platform for them to showcase their talents to leading law firms.
The representatives from Swansea School of Law consisted of three law students; Naomi Ninan, Saman Salamat and Mubashir Syed. The three performed brilliantly at the competition; only 24 qualified for the finals out of circa. 2200 contestants, and Swansea represented 3 of these with 2 qualifying for the 6 grand finalists.
Furthermore, the Swansea students also won both vacation scheme prizes available in the competition, and personalised mentor support with magic circle firm Clifford Chance.
The results were as follows:
- Naomi placed first overall, winning a vacation scheme at Travers Smith
- Mubashir placed second overall, winning a vacation scheme at Fieldfisher
- Saman placed 24th overall, winning personalised sessions with a Clifford Chance Partner and Graduate Recruitment
After the excellent showing from Swansea’s law students, the competition founder, Denis Viskovich, expressed how impressed he was with their performances, and that several of the main sponsoring firms have also taken a resulting interest in students from Swansea University, hopefully ensuring excellent opportunities for future students and graduates.
Professor Alison Perry, Head of Law at Swansea University, said:
“We are very proud of all of our students who entered this competition, and offer our congratulations to the three Finalists who performed exceptionally well!”
Speaking of the team’s achievements, Matthew Parry, Skills Competition Lead at the School of Law had the following to say:
“Commercial awareness is an essential part of lawyering skills and the performance of Naomi, Mubashir, and Saman demonstrate their exceptional understanding of this reality. We are very proud of their achievements which reflect a huge amount of work and instincts as problem-solvers. In addition to his own performance, Mubashir, as President of the Swansea Student Law Society, has been instrumental in driving participation in this competition and the results are a superb achievement for the students, the society, and the University.”
