The Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL) hosted “Autonomous Ships in Maritime Law Conference” on 23 October 2024 at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University (AYBU) Faculty of Law Conference Hall in collaboration with Ankara University National Center for the Sea and Maritime Law (DEHUKAM).
In the first session, Professors Soyer and Leloudas from the IISTL delivered talks on legal issues concerning MASS and drones. This session was chaired by Professor Samin Űnan (Piri Reis University, Faculty of Law). In the second session, chaired by Professor Dr Neslihan Karataş Durmuş (Dean of AYBU Faculty of Law), Dr. Selim Ciğer, Dr. Cerin Cerit Dindar, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Kűbra Ecemiş Yilmaz shared the outcomes of their most recently completed research project on the subject funded by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Institution in Turkey).
Apart from academics and students, the event attracted law practitioners and representatives from several government offices in Ankara.
Speaking after the event, Prof Soyer (Director of the IISTL) said: “We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Ali Cengiz Köseoglu (Rector of the AUYB) for delivering the opening speech of the event and Mustafa Baskara (DEHUKAM) for his support to run this event successfully. We worked closely with Dr Ceren Cerit Dindar and other academics who worked tirelessly on this project funded by TUBITAK. It is a great pleasure to see its successful completion and I genuinely hope it will be a useful research tool.”
