Staff and students from the Department of Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy, the School of Social Sciences, and the Include Hub came together to celebrate the success of a fantastic new module, that’s breaking barriers and taking student learning to new places.
For the first time, a selected number of final year undergraduate Criminology students got the opportunity to work alongside students from the Include Hub to work collaboratively to challenge the lens through which people are viewed and treated in the Criminal Justice System.
Students from The Hub and the University had the chance to experience a totally different learning environment. Students were taught together both within the University and at The Hub which is a community project in the heart of Swansea.
The module brought together academic understanding the process of how people desist from offending with the lived experience of marginalisation and stigma.
Head of the School of Social Sciences, Professor Ryan Murphy said ‘Community is at the heart of Swansea University and that is the essence of this new module’.
Professor Debbie Jones, the module co-ordinator and School Education Lead for the School of Social Sciences, said,
‘It is wonderful to see this project come full circle. This module is designed on a study funded by the Society for Research into Higher Education that explored the role of Higher Education in supporting desistance from offending which was carried out in partnership with Include. The module has brought together students from Criminology and Include to work learn together and the results have been astonishing. It is a great example of students working together to support each other and experience research-led teaching in action.’
