My name is Griffith Terry, and I am currently a Software Engineering student in my final year, graduating later this June.
Why did you choose to study your degree at Swansea?
Truthfully, I had never heard of the university or even Swansea itself before I encountered a stall for it at a UCAS fair in London. After talking to the reps there I was impressed with what I
had heard and after coming to see it for myself during an open day I knew my choice was made. The facilities I saw and the people that I spoke to that day showed me a high-quality university with
people who enjoyed being there. I do not regret this choice.
What is your favourite thing about your course?
My course, specifically Software Engineering, is particularly suited to me because it combines the fun and problem-solving of programming with knowledge about business and industry. The unique
modules you get on SE give quite a few opportunities for group work, allowing you to develop your interpersonal skills as well as show you what working in the industry can be like. The
combination of these things leads you to be well-suited for the career ahead of you. Aside from the SE-only modules, the syllabus given to both software engineers and computer scientists alike
are a comprehensive one. If one is not an amazing programmer before university they don’t have to worry, because this course has been very good with starting you off on fundamentals before giving
you great ways to test that knowledge. I would wholeheartedly recommend this course as well as the Computer Science course.
What is your favourite thing about Swansea (the city/area)?
Swansea has a unique quality over all the universities that I visited for open days, and that is that it feels alive. If you look around, you can see a town that is not just propped up by the
university, and has an actual community filled with lovely people. It has a lot of things to do as well, from multiple board game cafes to axe-throwing places to even an escape room. As well
there is much to explore, with a very diverse and beautiful landscape. I have not run out of things to do and places to explore while I’ve been here. Go walk up Townhill at sunrise or sunset, you
won't regret it.
Are you/have you been part of a society?
I have been a part of the Musicians Society since I came to Swansea, and it has been a cornerstone of my life ever since. I was a regular member in my first year, decided to start a
saxophone-only band under them in my second year and continued to run the band in my third year. I have been elected Small Bands Manager on its committee, overseeing all 7 small bands (including
mine). It has been an amazing experience filled with lovely people, and it has been great to be able to develop a skill and hobby alongside socialising. I think the results you see from joining a
group like this can be a massive confidence boost, and I would recommend joining not just this society but any society period when you come to university.
Would you recommend Swansea University to other students? Why?
If the rest of this profile had not shown it enough, yes, I wholeheartedly recommend Swansea University. It’s a great school in a great location, and the people I have met here have been some of
the nicest I’ve ever known. It has been the perfect university for me to learn and grow into a well-rounded adult.
