Work commences to replace the University's chemical cleaning products with BioHygiene, the UK’s leading biotech-based cleaning products.

Waste and Recycling Officer Fiona Wheatley and facilities management (FM) company Mitie are working with BioHygiene to replace all chemical cleaning products used for academic teaching spaces, public areas and toilets with a switch to the BioHygiene range.

BioHygiene’s products, which are made from naturally derived, sustainable, renewable ingredients work on a dosing system. This means that the BioHygiene cleaning products are supplied in high concentration, meaning less liquid and single use plastic is required and used for product supply.

Small volumes of the high concentration liquid are diluted into water and into reusable bottles meaning less plastic waste is generated overall. The PCR bottles in which the high concentration liquid arrives can also be returned to the BioHygiene manufacturing complex to be refilled, which aids the circular economy.

Due to the recyclable and compostable packaging (PCR) this means that Mitie and the University will be able to significantly reduce plastic pollution and its use of single use plastics, up to a 37% reduction over the course of a year.

As a UK manufacturer, introducing BioHygiene to the cleaning schedule will also reduce the University’s overall transportation costs, and crucially, the switch to BioHygiene, which was a joint partnership project between Fiona and Mitie will reduce Swansea University’s impact on the environment and result in an overall carbon reduction, helping the university move closer to achieving its goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2035.

Reducing our use of single use plastic along with utilising BioHygiene’s sustainable technologies will help deliver an 86% reduction of CO2e.
