Swansea University is at the forefront of a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionise artificial intelligence (AI) research and applications across various industries. As part of a £100 million boost in AI research funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Swansea University is playing a pivotal role in this transformative venture.

AI Research Hubs and Edge AI

The UK government has established nine new AI research hubs to drive next-generation innovations. Supported by £80 million from EPSRC, these hubs will tackle complex challenges and enhance AI capabilities in healthcare, electronics, and beyond. Swansea University is a key contributor to the National Edge AI Hub, focusing on enhancing the resilience and security of edge AI, particularly against cyber threats.

Responsible AI Initiatives

Ethical and responsible AI deployment is a major focus, with AHRC funding ten scoping studies under the Bridging Responsible AI Divides (BRAID) program. These studies aim to define responsible AI across education, policing, and creative industries. Swansea University is actively involved in shaping these ethical frameworks.

Transformative Impact

Swansea University's participation in these AI research hubs signifies its commitment to advancing AI technology responsibly. These efforts are expected to yield revolutionary innovations in healthcare, cyber defence, and energy-efficient electronics. By contributing to these initiatives, Swansea University is enhancing its research capabilities and shaping the future of AI in the UK and beyond.

These high-impact projects ensure the UK remains at the cutting edge of AI research and innovation, fostering economic growth and improving quality of life. Swansea University’s involvement exemplifies its dedication to a technologically advanced and ethically sound future.

"Being part of these pioneering AI research hubs allows us to leverage our expertise and contribute to advancements that will have far-reaching impacts," noted Co-investigator on the project and principal investigator at Swansea University, Professor and Head of Computer Science, Xianghua Xie. "We are committed to ensuring that AI develops in an innovative and responsible way."
