Swansea Law Students win Inner-Temple Inter-Varsity Moot 2025

On the 2nd February 2025, two students represented the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law, Swansea University at a prestigious mooting competition, hosted by Inner Temple Inn of Court: one of the four Inns of Court that is home to the Bar in England and Wales. Over the course of the (very long!) day, final year, Amelia Triaca and second year (and part of the dual degree programme with Trent University) Keara-Lynn Douglas presented submissions on a very tpical, fictional contract law scenario involving the question of penalty clauses related to parking fines. At various times representing the Appellant and the Respondent, they argued for both sides with equal commitment and strength and were rewarded by being named in the top eight teams after two rounds who progressed to the knock-outs (following moots against London Metropolitan University and the University of Sheffield).

After lunch in the Inn’s Hall, they proceeded to prevail against teams from the University of Nottingham and the University of York before competing against Durham University in the Final. After a tense competition, and representing the weaker side in the Final, the judges, Master Reader Helen Davies KC, Master Kabir Sheikh KC, and Master Caroline Willbourne declared Swansea as the winning team. This was a fantastic achievement by Amelia and Keara-Lynn, both of whom are active in the extra-curricular communication skills programme at the Law School. They were presented with prizes, including the King’s Cup, which had been presented to the Inn by the King of Bhutan and was last won in 2024 by the University of Oxford.

Amelia said “Winning the Inner Temple Mooting Competition was one of the proudest moments of my life, and I was very honoured to represent Swansea University.”

Keara-Lynn said “Competing in the Inner Temple Moot was an incredible opportunity to challenge ourselves and develop our advocacy skills. The level of competition was excellent.”

The opportunity to participate in skills based competitions focusing on advocacy, negotiations, client interviewing and mediation and a central part of the experiential based learning that students can experience at Swansea Law School and the achievements of Amelia and Keara-Lynn are the latest in a series of fantastic results for the Law Schools Communications Programme.
