Swansea University and Dalian Maritime University will be launching a new double undergraduate degree (LLB in Maritime Law), with the first intake in September 2024.

This degree will be taught in Dalian with an option for students to study at Swansea in their final year of their LLB studies. At the end of the 4-year period those completing the course will be awarded an undergraduate degree from both universities.

This innovative programme, which focuses on commercial and maritime law, was approved by the Ministry of Education in China following a rigorous scrutiny process and was launched formally on 12 June 2024 at a virtual ceremony which was attended by the senior management teams of both universities.

During the launch, Swansea University was represented by Professor Paul Boyle (Vice-Chancellor), Professor Judith Lamie (Pro-Vice Chancellor), Professor Ryan Murphy (Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science), Professor Alison Perry (Head of School of Law) and Professor Barış Soyer (Director of Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law).

Dalian Maritime University was represented by Professor Hongjun SHAN (DMU President), Dr Jinlei ZHANG (Dean of College of International Collaboration), Professor Zuoxian ZHU (Dean of the Law School), Dr Xingguo CAO (Director of the Programme) and Ms Shihui YU (Deputy Director of the Programme).

During the launch, Professor Boyle indicated that maritime law is a particular strength at Swansea University and by aligning expertise with that of Dalian Maritime University in this field Swansea will produce graduates who have global appeal.

He added that this collaboration would undoubtedly be an aid to the advancement of research collaboration between our two institutions. Professor Shan regarded the collaboration as one of “two giants in the field” and congratulated everyone involved in delivering this partnership.
