A special film screening of Natalie McGrath's acclaimed play The Beat of Our Hearts will be held in the Museum of Cardiff at 11am on Saturday 8 February, marking LGBTQ+ History Month.
The Beat of Our Hearts, a thought-provoking play inspired by collaborative research conducted by Dr Charlotte Jones of Swansea University’s Department of Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy, delves into themes of loneliness, love, and belonging, showcasing the power of community collaboration.
The screening will be introduced by the play’s writer, Natalie McGrath, and Mark Etheridge, Principal Curator of Collection Development: LGBTQ+ at St Fagans National Museum of History.
Dr Charlotte Jones said: “The Beat of Our Hearts tells a story of queer affinities across time and generations, and the excitement of building positive spaces full of joy and creativity. This story was inspired by a body of research, and contributions from individuals and communities from across the southwest.
“We're grateful to Swansea University for giving us the opportunity to share work from this project originally about LGBTQ+ lives in Cornwall and Devon, and to explore some of the connections and contrasts with LGBTQ+ lives across Wales. This special film screening of a production originally performed at the Northcott Theatre will be a Welsh premiere of the play - we're excited to share this beautiful story for LGBTQ+ History Month!”
Spaces are free but limited, so advance booking is essential.
Book your ticket to the film screening (run time 1 hour 45 minutes).
A free creative writing workshop, led by Norena Shopland, will follow the screening and offer attendees a chance to explore and respond to the play’s themes through their own writing. Although the workshop is currently sold out, interested individuals can join the waiting list to be notified if spaces become available.
