BEng Mechanical Engineering (With a Year in Industry)

Why did you choose to study your degree at Swansea?
I studied Economics and a lot of Mathematics before university. Initially, I had little idea of what I wanted to study at university, other than something involving numbers. I thought about pursuing a degree in Business or Economics, but after some research, I discovered Mechanical Engineering—a subject that combines creativity with plenty of maths. Therefore, I decided to pursue Mechanical Engineering and began searching for the right university.
Having lived in Derby (in the Midlands) my entire life, which is one of the furthest cities from any coastline, I wanted to study at a university close to the seaside. However, since I hadn’t studied Physics, my options were limited. After reviewing some ranking tables and Google Maps, I found Swansea University, the highest-ranked university for engineering for those who hadn’t studied Physics and wanted to be near the sea.
All it took was one open day, and I was sold. The location, the city, the facilities, and the friendly atmosphere charmed me instantly. The entry requirements matched my expected grades, so I chose to study Mechanical Engineering at Swansea.

Have you undertaken a work placement as part of your course (Year in Industry)?
Yes, I undertook a Year in Industry after completing my second year. Initially, I interned at a large company but had a negative experience due to poor management and a lack of internal support. On the other hand, the University’s employability team was fully supportive and assisted me in every way they could until I eventually resigned.
To complete the required engineering competencies, Swansea University offered me a job as a Makerspace Development Engineer. In this role, I was tasked with overseeing the initial development and setup of the University’s new makerspace. I also assist students using the workspace daily. I’ve helped technical societies, individual projects, and even the teams competing in the IMechE Design Challenge, where I designed and manufactured the trophy for the winning team.

Would you recommend Swansea University to other students?
I’m so glad I chose Swansea. I love the course, the city both day and night, the support from staff, the opportunities to learn new things, and—last but not least—the beach.

Have you lived in halls during your studies?
I lived on Bay Campus during my first year and for a few months during my year in industry placement, which was very convenient for getting to lectures and work.

Have you worked part-time during your degree?
I have been an outreach ambassador for the university for Bloodhound LSR and 50% for the Future. These roles have been really flexible, allowing me to balance my studies with earning extra money.

Have you accessed student support at Swansea University?
I have accessed several student support services throughout my studies, including:
• Mental Health
• Disability Office
• Employability
The support I have received has been amazing from each of these departments.
